Click/checkmark the box and make sure 'Windows XP SP3' is selected. Close the box and then run your game, it should work fine. All versions of Windows have compatibility mode for programs made for older Operating Systems. Another option would be installing a Virtual Machine using a software like VMWare. You can have Vista running but then open Windows XP in a Window like you do with your browser, so you will basically be using Windows XP and all of it's functions like you would with any other Operating System.

I use windows 7 ultimate x64 bit and i have a problem in palying most of games in network with another pc using the same operating system that i use. And the problem was that windows 7 dosen't have IPX protocol.
Taking out the old 'horizontal span' that every stereoscopic program on earth needed and replacing it with something that is not compatible is a sign of ignorance, arrogance or bad marketing (or some combination of the foregoing). Apologies for the thread necromancy, but I had a problem similar enough that threads like these came up as the solution, but it turned out that my scenario, and solution, were very different. Trying to install the IPX protocol on windows vista or later ONLY APPLIES to games coded for the early versions of windows, where TCP/IP was not yet a standard protocol.

A year ago, I played DFBHD, JOTR, and DFX, in a LAN network with 2 computers one with Win XP and another with Win 7. But when I tried to play Delta Force 1 and DF2 in LAN I got this error 'Couldn't initialize provider'. I found out that old games like DF1, DF2, DFLW, DFTFD, require a special IPX protocol to play in LAN. I've managed to install the IPX protocol in Win XP but not in Win 7.
Download html2pdf php library. The IPX/ SPX protocol is used by some old games, such as Red Alert and Command & Conquer, for multi-player gameplay. It is not natively supported by Windows Vista (32 bit).
There is a 'solution' that is posted on a few places for Vista. Be aware though, that the solution first only works on 32-bit, and that the 'solution' probably don't even work. (It's more of a hack than a clean install.) There are a few obvious things, like the properties button on IPX protocol is grayed out (meaning you can't change frame type), and you can't bind IPX to the client of Windows Networking protocol. There are a lot of things I like about Windows 7, but they are mostly performance related due to changes in processors and graphics cards. The organization and window dressing is pure BS. As the old maxim of good design goes: Form follows function. Someone at MS seems to have suffered Mac envy and was more interested in window dressing than functionality. Moving old utilities around and renaming them annoys me every day. Who ever did that should be looking for a new job.

However, there are still some people who have these newer OS's that require the above mentioned protocols. Most often I have seen the requests either in the context of a specific game to function Examples: or with trying to network a couple of machines that have both the XP OS and Windows Vista/7. Examples: (Windows 7 example answered by a MS engineer that seemed to be unsuccessful). I also note that Windows 7 is slow to find other machines. Seems it is searching the whole world where IPX was, virtually instant access and no big searching lag. More risk and slower response, oh yeah, that's a good marketing plan -- just cover it up with some bad art work so you can look more Mac-like. Someone please fire who ever made these decisions. It does NOT APPLY to DOS games, which you are probably running in the DosBox emulator. Emulators are what we now call Virtual machines, and Dosbox is pretty smart. This means you just need to configure one Dosbox to fire up an IPX server, and all the other DosBoxes on the LAN to fire up IPX clients, and you're good to go. I just wanted to point out that you might not need IPX in windows at all. EA / Origin gave away dungeon keeper for free, so the kids and I grabbed 3 copies, and tried multiplayer. The EA copy doesn't seem to be the latest one, so doesn't yet have TCP, only IPX. Yet another option is doing what I did and crate a partion on your Hard Drive Disk of about 100 - 150GB and install XP onto that partion and create a Dual-Boot machine. I have a Dual-Boot of XP and 7 and I use the XP partion for gaming because of It's low resource usage and light GUI, along with the reason that XP seems to be more gamer-friendly too. Now you will have the IPX protocol in installed protocol list (if everything works as it should), but it will probably not work. Are you kidding me? This is Microsoft's official response? There's no native IPX/SPX so contact Novell.
You may be able to get xp's drivers to work on newer operating systems, but getting it to work with 64bit operating systems does not appear to work and 32bit operating systems are difficult at best. You are in about the same boat for netbeui, but there is some support for dlc from microsoft but they use ip and a gateway.
But for you to even come in here and post that garbage of a statement. No duh, it's not natively supported, no duh. This post is a year old, I really hope that you don't answer questions for support help anymore. I used to use IPX/SPX because I don't like to have my production machines exposed to the Internet any more than absolutely necessary. With IPX, I could run a local area net and keep TCP/Internet turned off completely on all but one machine. Now, I feel very exposed to all the potential garbage that the Internet can bring.
Microsoft's official answer is to ask Novell as it is a Novell protocol. Novell's official answer is that it is a Microsoft operating system, ask Microsoft. (Recent versions of Novell Client do not support IPX) For gaming appears to be the best bet, but is not compatible with ipx at the wire level. There are advantages as this allows you to play with people on other networks without doing ipx routing. The disadvantages are that if you have some computers that talk ipx, you still need the wrapper, and it is not available for os/2, netware or linux (or anything else besides windows, although source code is available). For use with industrial equipment like cnc setups there are no good answers. Less bad ones are things like virtual machines, ftp servers and ask the vendor (which is occasionally useful).

How does the most 'user-friendly' operating system company refuse to support one of the most widely used LAN protocols for old games? I mean I'm a PC and i'm 4 1/2 years old, I can make pictures look good, yay! Is this what Microsoft is now? I'm not gonna lie, I don't have an issue Windows supporting IPX, that's fine.
