However, it's complicated because there are millions of stars and millions of lives, which begs the question, how are you special or unique compared to all these other lives. On the contrary, the moon and Antarctica are two places man can realistically go that are completely deserted. There is no human contact yet your uniqueness goes unheard of even if you are the only individual there.

Both hint at an interest of reincarnation; or a spirituality that is very anti-religion. I Came As A Rat and Life Like Weeds also hint at the reincarnation theme, if not in a religious sense then at least hinting at infinite processes, the universe being a perpetual motion machine. Plenty of songs on their other albums hint at this as well (in my opinion: Interstate 8, Parting Of The Sensory, People As Places As People, Never Ending Math Equation, Night On The Sun-more focusing on the impermanence of life and our place in the universe IMO, So Much Beauty In Dirt. And many more!). Modest Mouse has always had always had such an incredible view on our current place in life. A beautiful 21st century social commentary paired with philosophical musings that not many other artists I've seen have been able to come close to as far as insightfulness disguised as beautifully poetic lyrics. Not to mention the perfectly cacophonous, yet beautiful instrumentals.
• Brock, Isaac. Interview by Josh Model.
Isaac wishes he could have said how much he loved her, how he wishes that he hadn't have gotten so angry at her. It was all his fault; but he couldn't do anything to control it because 'our hearts are just made out of strings to be pulled.' Finally, he talks to himself in his infinite loneliness. The final conclusion that he comes to from this is What People Are Made Of, particularly people like himself: THEY AIN'T MADE OF NOTHIN' BUT WATER AND SHIT. I think the album is more about loneliness and making yourself stand out. Take The Stars are Projectors for instance. The idea of a star projecting your life down on earth is suppose to make you feel special as it relates your life to a star.

The result of this pursuit for understanding is unresolved isolation. Removed from daily life, he 'can't be blamed for nothing anymore.' I've always seen this album to be a pondering about the vastness of the universe versus the impermanence and melancholy of human life. He certainly focuses on gloomier aspects of life in this album. I love his recurring theme of infinity. This album in particular, in 3rd Planet: 'The universe is shaped exactly like the Earth, if you go straight long enough you end up where you were' and The Stars Are Projectors: 'Was there a need for creation? That was hidden in a math equation, and that's this: where do circles begin?'

So begins an album which tells the story of a man (who I'll call Isaac), who rather than being the one doing the fucking, gets kicked over and over again. It begins with the song Third Planet, which sets the stage.

No one really cared for it at all Not the gravity plan Early, early in the morning It pulls all on down my sore feet I wanna go back to sleep In the motions and the things that you say It all will fall, fall right into place As fruit drops, flesh it sags Everything will fall right into place When we die, some sink and some lay But at least I don't see you float away And all the split milk, sex and weight It all will fall, fall right into place.
He realizes that she had it harder than he could have imagined at the time, and it was him who pushed her away, not the other way around. In Third Planet, Isaac remarked that her heart was dripping pitch and made of wood, in The Stars are Projectors he realizes that he was the one with the heavy, wooden heart all along. He also comes to grips with politicians, who are only trying to find the best way to get things done. With the rest of his time, Isaac wonders about the universe, and how it was actually created. He's abandoned his faith in God by this time, so he searches for other answers. Wild Pack Of Family Dogs serves as a flashback to Isaac as a kid.

Everything is falling apart. His boss just quit the job to go look for blindspots, the world is obsessed with God's plan for them, and Isaac is with his girlfriend. She's just had a miscarriage (baby-cum-angels fly around you, reminding you we used to be three and not just two.), which has put a strain on both of them. Isaac ties this back to the universe as a whole, the growth of a child in the womb is similar to the life on earth, growing and living, before dying without ever leaving the third planet. Foreshadowing the rest of the album, he remarks; the universe is shaped exactly like the earth, if you go straight long enough, you'll end up where you were.

Then, Isaac's sister died, and still too young to understand, he clung to the idea that the pack of dogs must have eaten her. Later, after his dad lost his job, Isaac fell into a depression where he'd sit outside waiting for the pack to claim him. According to an interview given in in 2004, he intended to remix the album 'on his own time, using his own money, simply to have a copy he alone could hear'. Epic Records then offered to remaster the album to CD, reissuing it on March 9, 2004 with remastered audio, new artwork and four additional tracks from a session. Deusner of Pitchfork rated the remastered edition a 5.0 out of 10, writing highly of the original album itself but questioning the decision to re-release it just four years after its initial release, calling the additional material 'paltry offerings' and commenting that 'no one was really asking for it, and there's simply not enough here to justify the expense or even a rating as high as the original.' A vinyl and CD reissue was released on April 13, 2010 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the album, with both versions reverting to the original artwork and track listing.
