Because of the lack of an HDMI input on the product I had to use Component cables to even get a picture and sound at the same time.
The future of home surround for music and movies looks bleak. Part of the problem for multichannel music is that no one ever really figured out what to do with the extra channels.
That's not quite correct. Lexicon Logic 7 extracts the ambience from the 2-channel recording and routs it to the surrounds and rears while keeping the original stereo information mainly in the three front channels. The effect can be quite dramatic with Lexicon products that include adjustable L7, but David is looking for reasonably priced equipment. Does any one know how the L7 in Harmon Kardon receivers compares to that in the Lexicon products?
At a minimum, this surround sound format requires two layers of speakers. The first layer can be a traditional 5.1 channel layout, but then another layer, positioned above the first layer, requires two front and two rear speakers. Then, to top it off, if possible, one additional speaker that is ceiling mounted above the primary seating area (which is referred to as the Voice of God (VOG) channel. The brings the total number of channels up to 10.1. When moving up to a 9.1 or 11.1 channel receiver, unless it is Dolby Atmos or DTS:X-enabled and you speaker setup with both horizontal and vertically mapped channels and playing Dolby Atmos/DTS:X encoded content, the receiver is actually post-processing the original 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 channel encoded soundtracks and placing them in a 9 or 11 channel environment The results can be quite impressive, depending on the quality of the source material, but it does not mean that it is required that you make this leap. After all, many don't have the room for all those extra speakers!

Movies have had surround sound in theaters for more than half a century, and multichannel movies are now -- in theaters and at home -- the norm. We've had the opportunity to buy music surround formats for almost as long, and not one has ever gained widespread acceptance in the market.
In addition, each different channel is designed to provide spatial sound effects — meaning that the channels can work together to make sounds come from different locations relative to you, the listener. The goal is to decode those signals onto the correct channels to replicate the studio’s intent. So, let’s say that a squadron of jets in a scene from Top Gun is doing a fly-by of the carrier command bridge. If you were in the command bridge, you’d hear the jets come in from the left, sweep across in front of you, and then disappear to the right and the rear as they turn off to the starboard side of the ship. If you’re sitting in a well-tuned home theater, you should hear no differently.

People, one detail i want to let very clever, playing stereo and using PLII the center is not 'extract' and play what is common in left and right but sum the channels, the result is mono L+R. Have dozen more possibles presets, i can remember now.PLII MS,GM, PLII x MV,MS, NEO6 CIN.lots more, need to check. My Sony is one 'Digital audio/Video Control Center' 6.1 and have zillions of adjusts in the front panel and in RC, i was electronic technician for ~35 years and i always learn news possibilities to use but i don't know how to adjust as sdurani posted, nothing about that in the manual. Now is late here.23:46 and my kid is sleeping, then i can't 'fight' to find the adjusts and hear now. LOL, i'm lost.
This has the effect of attenuating the noise that would result (by roughly 12 dB) should one attempt to play a DTS Music Disc with a non-DTS system, [ ] and thereby reducing the chance of speaker damage. However this is a non-issue for players with internal DTS decoders, such as some DVD-Audio and Blu-ray players; these devices will output a properly decoded audio signal through their analogue ports. Although all compliant DTS decoders support surround configurations of up to 5.1 channels, a DTS ES decoder must be used to fully decode discs with 6.0 or 6.1 channels of audio. DTS ES comes in two flavors: DTS ES Matrix and DTS ES Discrete. Depending on the disc and decoder used the Cs (center surround) channel will either be derived from the Ls and Rs of a conventional 5.1 track via matrix decoding, or exist as a fully discrete digital extension to a 5.0 or 5.1 core.
This provides additional speaker setup flexibility. Also, Audyssey DSX also gives users the option, in a 7.1 channel setup to place a set speakers between the surround speakers and the front speakers, instead of height speakers—these speakers are referred to as 'wide surround' speakers. Bi-Amping: Another option that is becoming more common on 7.1 channel receivers is. If you have front channel Speakers that have separate speaker connections for the midrange/tweeters and the woofers (I am not referring to the subwoofer, but the woofers in your front speakers), some 7.1 channel receivers allow you can reassign the amplifiers running the 6th and 7th channels to your front channels. Then enables you to retain a full 5.1 channel setup, but still, add two additional channels of amplification to your front left and right speakers. Another surround sound format available on some high-end home theater receivers, that requires 9.1 or more channels is.
To some, this extra speaker may not be worth the money, space, and effort to install. But if you want to experience greater realism, this rear-center speaker helps to create more precise positioning and imaging of sound. Moving sound effects, such as passing vehicles, voices, or bullets whizzing overhead, will seem far more real and defined with a 6.1 channel system. However, you have to make sure that the source content has been encoded to support this type of playback (e.g., DTS-ES). Similar to how the 6.1 steps up from a 5.1 channel system, a 7.1 channel receiver adds another speaker into the mix. So you'll have three front channels, two surround channels, and then two rear channels (plus the ). So does this extra, rear speaker make a significant impact on sound placement and surround effects?
The only device I would actually want to do 3.1 with would be a Meridian processor, and using the excellent Trifield mode (and near identical LCR speakers and amps - which I have ). It runs a 3.1 system whereby some load is eased off of the main two (mainly in the vocals department) so that the amps can have more drive for the low end, and the vocals are steered mainly through the centre speaker. Wider 'sweet-spot' but also I think better dynamics. I wouldn't go out to buy it specifically, but since having it I make a lot of use of it.

The only thing recommend is that the speakers should be Point Source rather than Radial. No special media is needed either. Vinyl records, Redbook CD's and other Hi-Res digital files are all candidates for this technology. Click to expand.Exactly.
Your basic home theater system offers 5.1 channels of sound through five separate speakers and one subwoofer. Like a two-channel system, the left and right speakers create that sense of direction and play most of the on-screen action. The center speaker is typically reserved for movie dialog, music vocals, and supporting sounds. The left and right surround/rear channels help to give that immersive dimension of space by playing off-screen surround sound and special effects.
7.1 Channel Support The AAC codec family has supported up to 48 channels of audio since its initial development through predefined channel configurations and a flexible escape mechanism.
The subwoofer channel (also known as Low-Frequency Effects, or LFE) adds very low bass for music sources and special effects on soundtracks. Together, all of the channels produce a 'soundfield' that envelops the listener with sound coming from the front and behind. All that a 6.1 channel system offers over a 5.1 system is one more speaker. With the addition of the rear-center, you end up with three speakers in front, two as surround, and then one dedicated at the rear (plus the subwoofer).
David, Could you describe your audio/video goals in more generic terms instead of asking opinions about specific solutions? In general, if you want a high-quality stereo audio environment for musical enjoyment, one rule of thumb is to spend 2/3 of your budget on speakers and 1/3 on electronics.

I wouldn't mind using 5-channel again just for kicks but I felt that if that was the ONLY was my vinyl could sound good, then my system was ill-managed and I needed another alternative. I had both a 5 channel setup and now a 2 channel setup and I prefer 2 channel, not only for music, but also for movies. I'm unsure why, but I think it has to do with just better equipment that I have now compared to my 5.1 setup. What's really peaked my interest is the (Band Assembled Crosstalk Cancellation Hierarchy) that was developed by Edgar Choueiri (over at Princeton University). What I think is cool about BACCH is that, other than the Filter/Processor which needs to be installed by a trained vendor. No other special A/V gear is needed. So most 2 channel audio systems are candidates.

Your basic stereo system (2.0) consists of two channels of sound — left and right — produced by a pair of stereo speakers. Most speakers are powered by a receiver (or ), although more modern ones can bypass the need for such equipment through extra features and/or wireless connectivity. A 2.1 channel system is achieved as soon as you incorporate a separate subwoofer () along with the stereo speakers. The benefit of choosing a 2.0 or 2.1 channel system is affordable simplicity. You can enjoy excellent audio for music, movies, and TV without the clutter of additional speakers and the wires that tend to come with them. But if a truer surround sound experience is what you're after, you'll want more than just one pair of speakers. Home theater receivers are distinguished from two-channel (stereo receivers) by having additional amplifier channels to support movie theater sound (e.g. Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1) or multi-channel music (e.g. DVD-Audio, discs).
