Cons: One USB port, but that is not a biggie. Read the online reviews on laptop sites when this was released for more information. Other Thoughts: Very clean and looks and functions like a new laptop and the original MSRP of $2,800 reflects in the build quality of this laptop.

In our test, however, the Touchpad turned out to be a bit troublesome as there were slight delays. As the Touchpad has, despite its compact proportions, two optically designated scroll regions, there are times when while navigating the scroll function is unintentionally activated. The stable viewpoints offered by the display can definitely be improved.

We think you're better off just booting into Windows 7, where you will have a much richer user experience. The notebook can boot Windows quite quickly — it will only take around 40sec compared to under 10sec for Latitude ON. Because the aim of Latitude ON is to boot up in only a few seconds when the notebook is powered off, it uses a standby mode that always consumes some of your battery power. It might not be much, but if you leave your notebook off for an extended period of time, you might find that the power capacity is reduced a little bit.

The Dell Latitude E4300 comes with one lowly speaker at the front of the notebook. It sounds tinny, there is absolutely no bass, and at the higher ends of the volume range it sounds muddled. It works for business use, it works for those to are listening to audio on the road, but do not expect premium sound out of this notebook.

The advantages of the robust chassis are utilized very well in the models of the Latitude series, especially the smaller and more compact ones, among which the E4300, with a 13.3 inch screen, is included. The variety and the number of connections available in a laptop are dependent on the size of the laptop.

What we really don't like about Dell Latitude ON is that it's very slow and doesn't provide a rich browsing experience; it can't cope with Flash and you can't install browser plug-ins. It's a decent enough environment for checking and sending e-mail via POP accounts, but that's it.

The half height function keys, and the location of the Home/End/Insert/Delete keys (upper half height row) and the Page Up/Down keys (next to the arrow keys) take a little getting used to. Once we got used to the locations of the Page Up/Down keys it was actually easier to navigate through webpages, documents, and tabbed interfaces. When comparing this keyboard to the keyboard of other Latitude E series notebooks, they all provide about the same typing experience but it just feels like the E4300’s keyboard is a little more firm.

Our system came configured with an Intel Core 2 Duo at 2.5GHz (a grunty 45nm Penryn generation CPU), and 2GB of 1066MHz DDR3 RAM. This makes it quite a performer for its size, delivering a PCMark05 score of 4,513. Those seeking more performance can upgrade to 4GB of RAM for AU$235, but sadly there is no 64-bit Windows option on the Dell site to take full advantage of this. Those seeking a 64-bit OS will need to upgrade. An unfortunate side effect of the power of this laptop is the considerable amount of heat it puts out. After using this laptop for the best part of a day, you will find it uncomfortably hot on your lap.

They were for all intents and purposes identical except for the graphics card and certification. The near-clone Inspirons for the D800 and D810 were the Inspiron 8500 and 8600; the D820 and D830 share hardware with Precision models M65 and M4300 respectively. There are even known cases of 'mixed-mode' samples of the latter, where the Dell-recorded type according to the service tag and markings differs from the BIOS-reported type with an identical service tag. Both Latitude D820 and D830 have stereo speakers mounted on both sides of the keyboard. Latitude D5x0 series [ ] The Latitude D500 series is a set of 'entry level' business models; they are built on a 15' non-widescreen form factor, although models before the D530 were sold with both 14.1' and 15' screens (the 14.1' having a wider.) They are 2-spindle devices (removable optical drive interchangeable with D6xx/D8xx machines), and roughly follow the technical generations (chipset and processor-wise) of the D6x0 and D8x0 series.

The laptop is also equipped with a docking station, which can be attached to the back of the laptop, so that, in case the need for more ports arise, the user can profit from the additional ports available on the docking station. As the laptop shrinks in size, the communication modules, offered in the laptop, increase indirectly in their importance. Due to this, the wireless communication technology included in a laptop tailored for mobility, like the Latitude M4300, is especially important.

Verdict The Latitude family from Dell is a big family of laptops, and those looking for a travelling laptop might want to consider the 12.1-inch E4200. Its specs are more limited, but it comes with an SSD as standard and it's cheaper. Those looking to go for a premium machine should look to the, which contains a plethora of bells and whistles and a 15.4-inch display. As it stands, the E4300 is a good compromise between portable and fully featured. However even with the dual eSATA/USB port, you might still run out of ports fast. While the Latitude family is flashy, it's also pricy. Our close to base model came in at AU$3,366 — this is a premium laptop.

It seems understandable that the connections available will have to decrease sometime in their number, and in their extent, as the size of the case decreases. This decrease is visible when our test model is compared to the Latitude E6500, the 15.4 inch model of the series. The digital DisplayPort, which can be used to connect an external monitor to the laptop, is missing on the case of the E4300 due to this previously mentioned decrease in the size of the case.
